NSW Labor promises scrutiny of big projects

All NSW government projects worth $1 billion or more will be scrutinised by a public inquiry if Labor wins the next election.

Opposition Leader Michael Daley promised to set up public planning inquiries into all major infrastructure projects before they are approved or work begins.

The inquiries will look at the feasibility of all options and can call witnesses to give evidence, with reports and proceedings made public.

“For too long decisions that affect the public have been made behind closed doors,” Daley said.

“This has to end. I want to bring transparency back to the planning for Sydney.”

He argues such inquiries will ensure no repeats of projects such as the government’s light rail, which has been embroiled in much controversy.
